You need to disconnect first to switch between protocols in the BitStream VPN app. You can view the VPN protocol by turning off the “Automatic Protocol Selection” option.
The VPN protocol type plays a role in the performance and stability of your connection, so it’s crucial to choose the right one when connecting to a VPN server. BitStream VPN recommends the automatic protocol as it selects the most suitable connection setting for you. However, if the automatic protocol option doesn’t work for you, you can proceed to switch between different protocols.
Protocol Guide:
IPSec:
IPSec is more reliable, but also a little slower, and is usually used for web browsing.
IKEv2:
IKEv2 is one of the fastest VPN protocols that provides stable connection and is usually used for streaming and downloading.
UDP:
UDP is mainly used for streaming and downloading. It provides a fast VPN connection with medium encryption.
Wireguard:
Wireguard provides a fast and secure VPN connection and it’s usually used for web browsing and streaming.

- Click Hamburger icon (≡) from the top right of BitStream VPN app
- Click the ⚙️ Preferences option at the right panel of the BitStream VPN app.
- From the general settings, select the Protocol tab
- Turn off Automatic protocol selection to change your protocol selection
- A warning will appear, click Proceed to continue.
- Choose the Protocol of your choice from the drop-down menu
- Upon selection, your protocol will be successfully changed
